The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, a demanding college preparatory curriculum, focuses on the classical liberal arts and sciences. Founded in 1968 as a common university entrance credential to serve a consortium of international schools, the program is availabe today at 2,127 schools and 125 countries to approximately 568,000 students. Please visit the IBO website at www.ibo.org for complete information.
Venture International Academy's program, will be it's first within the private school sector. Venture International Academy's program will be a large success as the students who apply will be selected scholarship recepiants that must meet not only a high standard in academics but the family will be limited financially.
Students who come to Venture International Academy's IB Program actually begin with a Pre-IB curriculum in grades nine and ten. The formal IB Program serves juniors and seniors. A typical IB studetn at VIA completes four credits of Language A (English), four credits in Language B (French, German or Spanish), four or five credits in Individuals and Societies (social studies), four credits in Mathematics, and five credits in Experimental Sciences. The IB Sixth Subject (elective) asks that a student learn Studio Arts, Music Performance, Theatre Arts, Psychology, Evironmental Sciences, or Physics. Many students choose to take more than one Sixth Subject. All IB students take a course in Theory of Knowledge, complete independent research leading to an original essay of about 4000 words, and document 150 hours of Creative/ Active/ Service (CAS) work outsied the classroom. Please be aware that it is the policy of VIA that any student committing to more than one magnet/choice program will be denied admission to any magnet/ choice program. The student will then be requested to go back to their home school for the school year.
Completing the requirements for the International Baccalaureate Diploma at VIA satisfies state and district requirments for graduation from high school. Earning the IB Diploma qualifies the student for 100% Florida Bright Futhers Scholarship.
VIA's magnet program in the Pre-IB curriculm is open to qulifying ninth grade students who live in Lake, Orange, Volusia, Seminole and Marion Counties. Eligible students must have completed or are currently enrolled in Algerbra I or higher. Acceptance is based upon previous achievement in school, using the following criteria:
1. Unweighted grade point average for grades six and seven (minimum 3.2)
2. Unweighted grade point average in core subjects for the first semester of grade eight (3.0)
3. High percentile scores on grade seven FCAT NRT (or another nationally normed stanadardized achievement test)
4. Completed application with essay
Each criterion is transfered to a numerical scale, all ae equally weighted. In the event that a student seeks to enter the Program after ninth grade, higher levels fo achievement are expected. Applications for admission to tenth grade are availabel upon request from the IB office. Each case of admission is treated individually based upon space available in the IB class (as this is a scholarship needs based program). Decisions of the admissions committee are final.
